I found a brilliant story about craft beer; “Craft Beer Is Dead. Gose Killed It.” by Joe Keohane.
Like all great satire, there are truths about human nature.

Jonathan Swift would be proud.
I have no interest in sour beers. I agree with everything Joe Keohane has to say about them, but I don’t really think craft beer is dead.
There seems to be no end to the proliferation of new breweries. Many are very good. At the same time, there are more and more exotic beers with unusual flavorings. These are marketing ploys. Many are mediocre beers.
I was on a shoot in Petoskey, MI and visited the Petoskey Brewing taproom one evening. I had time to talk with someone who was brewmaster, or owner, or somehow part of managing the brewery.
None of their beers, at least that evening, were flavored. He talked about his disdain for flavored and gimmicky beers. A beer should be able to stand on it own without added flavoring, according to him. I 100% agree. Their beers are excellent.
Oh no, it's a gose! |
PS: I came up with this post after inadvertently buying some gose at a brew pub. Somehow—alcohol may be involved with my decision making—I thought I was buying a lime-flavored lager beer. To my disappointment the next day, I saw that I had bought a lime-flavored gose. I will be giving this beer away to some mis-guided friends who think gose is a good thing.
PPS: Yes, I am a hypocrite. I occasionally like a citrus beer in the summer like Ruby Red Bird, or Bud Lite Lime. Yes, I am ashamed!
