The Shipping Hall of Shame Update: UPS Wins 2nd To Last Place Award

Obviously, this is the box's fault

A page on this blog is "The Shipping Hall of Shame."

I have so many shipping stories, I don't have time to post them most of the time.  Really.

My most recent misadventures are from USPS and UPS.

I sold a fresnel lens on eBay.  I promptly shipped it with USPS the next day and forgot about it.  About a week later, I get a curt email from the buyer asking why I haven't shipped it yet.  It turns out, he went to his post office to investigate.  They told him that I hadn't shipped it even though the tracking information says it was shipped.  I don't blame the buyer for being mad.

I went to my post office about it.  The package was missing.  The clerk was polite and helpful but told me honestly his supervisors may or may not even look into it.  The clerk even called me with an update later in the day; the package was still missing.  After another week went by, I assumed the package was lost or stolen for good and refunded the buyers money.  To my surprise the package was finally delivered though it was almost 2 weeks late.  I never received any notification from USPS even though I had signed-up for them.  The buyer was awesome and quickly paid me for the lens.

It's a Saturday today.  I've been home all day along with my wife.  I was looking for some Aputure lights to be delivered by UPS that required a signature for delivery all day.  The package was supposed to be delivered Friday but it wasn't.  I don't remember what the UPS excuse was for no delivery.

Of course, UPS and my package never showed up on Saturday either.  Instead, I receive a notification that they missed me when they tried to deliver it.  I gotten this lie at least a half dozen other times from UPS.  They will say they tried to deliver a package but I wasn't home.

I have a security camera at the front door.  It notifies me anytime someone comes to the door.  I know if someone came to the door.  This is particularly frustrating when I have been waiting at home for a delivery.  It would be much less frustrating if they just told the truth and said, "We were too busy today and unable to deliver you package.  We are sorry."

A postscript to this story:  I've had battered, damaged packages from all the delivery service but UPS seems to lead the way with the worst.  I happened to be home one day early this year when UPS was dropping off a package.  The box was a battered mess.  I said something to the delivery man.  He told me it was the box's fault.  Really.

UPS wins my Second To Last Place award.  They are so close to winning my First To Last Place award, currently held my USPS.  I think next time they may just win it.
