Best Practices: Gasoline

One of the most hazardous things we work with on-set is gasoline. We commonly have gas around for small electric generators. Best practices when working with gasoline: Gas must always be stored in "approved" contains. Ideally, only use safety gas cans not cheap plastics containers that you see at big box stores. Safety gas cans have a number of safety features like: heavy duty metal can; vapor tight container but will allow excess pressure escape; usually have features for dispensing gas without spilling (The cheap plastics ones are notorious for spilling gas.); there is a flame arrestor, etc. A couple safety gas cans; a new one on the left and an old one on the right. I recently (August 2023) wrapped a movie in Bentonville, AR; The Tower . We were fortunate to get a SAG wavier to finish shooting the film. On our last week, we spent 6 days shooting in a water tank on a stage. Here's the tank; 20 feet in diameter and 11 feet high Most of the lighting was from above the tank, but the DP wanted some light in the tank to glow the water. I have little knowledge of submersible lights. After some Internet searching and some phone calls, I found submersible Titan tube housings. These were new to me, but relatively simple to use. The biggest difference for me was using my Exalux One to control them with DMX versus my usual method; the Astera App. The housings worked great. I wish I knew what brand these were. Rented, they came with no identifiable information. When looking for submersible Titan tube housings, I found there are at least 2 different manufacturers. Best Practices: Beadboard Bounce

It's spring, a perfect time for cleaning and maintenance. I made up new 4x4' beadboard bounces last week. It's been overdue. The ones I had were starting to look battered. Best practice is to have a clean, flat beadboard. I was out of 2" white tape and used gray. I covered it with white later. Beadboard bounces--I've heard some Canadian DPs call them "polys"--are an ubiquitous tool on set. Easy to rig or hand hold, the light-weight beadboard gives a soft light whether the source is passive or direct. It is one of the first tools I can remember learning on set when I was a young, green, grip/electric. Beadboard is white expanded polystyrene foam board insulation. It is inexpensive. We usually work with 1"x4'x8' sheets. It is not hard to find in stores though I've noticed some of the big box home improvement stores no long carry it. Construction of a beadboard is simple.
