Covid-19 Layoff Week 2: Funky Friday

I just saw this morning, it is the 40th anniversary of the number 1 hit song; Funkytown.  (How is that possible?)

Funkytown is irresistibly joyful.  It makes you want to dance.  It goes straight to the music pleasure center of your brain.

Looking back, I would have hated this song in 1980.  I mostly listened to hard rock and progressive rock.  Listening to it now, I love it.  It is a great dance song.

The song was written by Steven Greenberg from Minneapolis.  His band was Lipps, Inc.  The story goes that part of his inspiration was bemoaning the lack of new music in Minneapolis.  He wanted to go to funkytown.  Ironically, Prince would explode on the Minneapolis music scene over the next couple years making it the center of funky.

This is the best version of the song and probably one that most people have never heard; the extended 12" version:

PS:  No one is looking, go ahead and dance!
