Best Practices: Gasoline

One of the most hazardous things we work with on-set is gasoline. We commonly have gas around for small electric generators. Best practices when working with gasoline: Gas must always be stored in "approved" contains. Ideally, only use safety gas cans not cheap plastics containers that you see at big box stores. Safety gas cans have a number of safety features like: heavy duty metal can; vapor tight container but will allow excess pressure escape; usually have features for dispensing gas without spilling (The cheap plastics ones are notorious for spilling gas.); there is a flame arrestor, etc. A couple safety gas cans; a new one on the left and an old one on the right. Electric Tech: Submersible Titan Tube Housings

I recently (August 2023) wrapped a movie in Bentonville, AR; The Tower . We were fortunate to get a SAG wavier to finish shooting the film. On our last week, we spent 6 days shooting in a water tank on a stage. Here's the tank; 20 feet in diameter and 11 feet high Most of the lighting was from above the tank, but the DP wanted some light in the tank to glow the water. I have little knowledge of submersible lights. After some Internet searching and some phone calls, I found submersible Titan tube housings. These were new to me, but relatively simple to use. The biggest difference for me was using my Exalux One to control them with DMX versus my usual method; the Astera App. The housings worked great. I wish I knew what brand these were. Best Practices: Shiny Boards

Resurfacing a shiny board with a heavy duty, high-reflective mylar It's spring. I've been using the good weather to catch-up on maintenance. I recently recovered my shiny boards or 4x4' reflectors. Shiny boards are a tool as old as Hollywood. They have a soft and hard side with a brake for locking the board's tilt angle. They are a valuable tool to have on any grip truck. Here's a before & after; an old board on the left and a refinished one on the right. It's a big improvement! One of my earliest memories as a young, green, grip was using shiny boards. The key grip showed me how to set them up: mount the board in a combo stand; point 1 leg directly away from you and set the board at the same angle; put a 35 pound shotbag on your shoulder; and then, using the leg pointing away from you, tilt the board back onto your shoulder, balancing the reflector and stand.
